How to Initiate Wireless Connection on the Physio-Control CR2

Purchasing the Physio-Control LIFEPAK CR2 defibrillator has many benefits, including the device’s child mode, bilingual options, and wireless connectivity. With the many automated external defibrillator (AED) maintenance requirements that owners must keep up with, a device with a Wi-Fi connection option can help make remote monitoring and data transfer a breeze.

If you didn’t already know, upon purchasing the Physio-Control LIFEPAK CR2 defibrillator, a LIFELINKcentral AED Program Manager account was set up for you. You will use this system to set up the Physio-Control LIFEPAK CR2’s Wi-Fi, cellular, or both capabilities.

How to Get Started: Identify Wi-Fi & Cellular Capabilities

The LIFEPAK CR2 defibrillator can connect to LIFELINKcentral AED Program Manager using  Wi-Fi, cellular, or both. You can use the USB connector if you need to connect to your LIFELINKcentral account without Wi-Fi or cellular. All LIFEPAK CR2 AEDs come with USB capabilities.

On Heartsmart, each Physio-Control LIFEPAK CR2 device is purchased with Wi-Fi, and some devices can be purchased with cellular capabilities and Wi-Fi. To determine whether your defibrillator has cellular capability, check the serial number label in the battery compartment on the back of the device.

As shown in the picture, if this additional pair of ID and IC numbers is present, the device has cellular capability, and the SIM card is activated.

Once you understand whether your device has Wi-Fi or cellular capabilities, you can set up your LIFELINKcentral account and connect to Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi setup typically only takes 10-20 minutes. When the Wi-Fi setup is complete, you will see UPDATE SUCCESSFUL on your LIFELINK account. If you already have Arch AED Medical Direction and Program Management, information collected in your LIFELINK account will automatically flow into Arch.

How to Initiate Wireless Connection

Now, you are ready to test your Wi-Fi settings and connections. Before initiating your wireless connection, be sure your Physio-Control LIFEPAK CR2 is in its intended location.

Step 1: Open the device’s lid and listen for voice prompts to start.

Step 2: Press and hold the LANGUAGE and CHILD MODE buttons until you hear the device prompt, “DEVICE READY.” *Note: The “Device Ready” prompt means the device is ready to respond to an emergency. It does NOT mean the Wi-Fi setup is complete. If you hear “Device Not Ready,” finish the wireless setup and contact our Heartsmart team at 800-422-8129 to assist with AED readiness setup.

Step 3: Immediately close the lid and place the AED in its permanent spot, whether that is in a cabinet, carrying case in a vehicle, or closet space. The AED will attempt a Wi-Fi connection during this time, so the device must be in its permanent spot.

Step 4: When connected, your device will either prompt, “WI-FI CONNECTION INITIATED” or “MOBILE CONNECTION INITIATED.”

Connecting with Wi-Fi

Step 5: If connecting with Wi-Fi, your device will prompt the following: “WI-FI CONNECTION INITIATED,” “CONNECTION IN PROGRESS,” and “CONNECTION ESTABLISHED.” There may be a pause between the last two prompts while the AED connects.

Step 6: Once a connection is established, your

online account will automatically be updated with its current status. You may hear your device beep every few seconds during the updating process. This is normal!

Step 7: If your device does not have a cellular connection, too, you will hear a prompt say “COMMUNICATION COMPLETE,” followed by “POWERING OFF.” If your device additionally has a cellular connection, it will immediately attempt to connect after the “COMMUNICATION COMPLETE” prompt.

Connecting with Cellular

Step 5: If your device does have a cellular connection, step 5 will consist of listening for device prompts that say “MOBILE CONNECTION INITIATED,” followed by “CONNECTION IN PROGRESS,” and “CONNECTION ESTABLISHED.” There may be a pause between the last prompts while the AED connects. *Note: The updates are not repeated if your account was already updated during the Wi-Fi connection.

Step 6: Once a connection is established, your online account will automatically be updated with its current status. You may hear your device beep every few seconds during the updating process. This is normal!

Step 7: When all updates are finished, your device will prompt, “COMMUNICATION COMPLETE,” followed by “POWERING OFF.”

Remember that you can still download data using the traditional USB method in an area without Wi-Fi or Cellular access. Even though USB is not typically used to monitor AED readiness, the USB connection can be used during the initial Wi-Fi setup and can be used to update setup options or software.

Connecting with Wi-Fi vs Cellular vs USB

Whether connecting with Wi-Fi, Cellular, or both, getting lost in the setup process is easy. It can also be discouraging if your Wi-Fi is not working or your device is out of cellular/Wi-Fi range. In this instance, you can always download data using USB connectors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How do I know if my Physio-Control LIFEPAK CR2 has Cellular or Wi-Fi capabilities?

A. To check if your defibrillator has cellular capability, look for the serial number label in the battery compartment on the back of the device. As shown in the picture, if this additional pair of ID and IC numbers is present, the device has cellular capability, and the SIM card is activated. The device has Wi-Fi capability if the number in the top right corner is present.

Q. What if my Physio-Control LIFEPAK CR2 lacks Wi-Fi or cellular connection?

A. If there is no Wi-Fi or cellular connection, you can still use USB to download data. Although USB is not typically used for monitoring AED readiness, it can be used during initial Wi-Fi setup and for updating setup options or software.

Q. Can I still use the Physio-Control LIFEPAK CR2 if I do not live in an area with Wi-Fi or cellular connection?

A. Yes – the device is still rescue-ready if you do not have the ability to use the Wi-Fi or cellular feature. However, you will have to manually download data using the USB cable from the device. Also, keep in mind you will not have access to your LIFELINKcentral account without Wi-Fi, so you will have to manually check the AED status indicator to stay up to date with expiring pads and batteries.

Q. How long does setting up a Wi-Fi connection for my Physio-Control LIFEPAK CR2 take?

A. Setting up a Wi-Fi connection usually takes between 10-20 minutes.

Q. When initiating a wireless connection, what happens if I do not hear my device prompt “DEVICE READY” or “DEVICE NOT READY?”

A. If you pressed both buttons and did not hear “DEVICE READY” or “DEVICE NOT READY,” you may have been too quick or slow. After opening the device’s lid, you must wait until voice prompts start before holding down the LANGUAGE and CHILD MODE buttons. When the voice prompts start, you have a 10-second window to press the two buttons. To try again, close and reopen the lid on your device.

Q. When connecting with Wi-Fi, what does it mean when my device says, “UNABLE TO ESTABLISH Wi-Fi NETWORK CONNECTION?”

A. This may mean that the signal strength at your location needs to be stronger to connect your device to the Wi-Fi network. To fix this, simply power off your device, move the AED installation close to your Wi-Fi, and try again.

Q. How can I confirm that my Physio-Control LIFEPAK CR2 device was successfully connected?

A. Log in to your LIFELINKcentral account, go to the EQUIPMENT page, and verify that your device’s status is READY in green. This indicates a successful connection.
